Is it somehow possible to log the span of time a user
is watching a video?

In fact, it’s using port 80, so it’s using a TCP connection via HTTP and not RTSP. You can choose where you want your progressive download to start at by scrubbing to a keyframe, but then its continueosly downloading the rest of the file - so you might produce more traffic than necessary. On the other hand, using port 80 you won’t have problems with firewalls in foreign networks that you can’t configure due to your needs.

Logging should not be a big deal if you implement it in the sources, I recommend tracking the popularity by creating statistics of the wrapper page.

I have implementet this but when I start the video from a new position. The video starts at that position, but the file is also reloaded (buffered).

Why does the player do that, it must be a waste of bandwidth.

Also if a user just see the first part of the video and then closes, the hole video have been downloaded and again we waste bandwidth.

But beside of this, it is a cool player.

programming this player was the first task for my web based media server called nibbler, for a demo of its capabilities click here :). so at that point a lot of things had to be done and the player, as you use it, was pretty good working. but i totally agree, due to bandwidth issues a buffer mechanism makes sense. i can’t promise to implement it soon, but i got the point

Is there anyway of being able to adjust the size of the player. I looked in the fla file but not being familiar with Flash, I couldnt see anyway of adjusting the size of the player,

How can I get it to start playing at a particular time? I have scrubber.swf and lighttpd installed and configured. How do I pass the “?start” variable?

The &position=X doesn’t seem to work on scrubber. I’ve tried multiple videos, some of which I can start streaming from any point in the video without it fully loaded, so that seems to work fine. Any ideas?

Of course you can change the (X)HTML-Code dynamically. I would recommend to use AJAX to enable the client to select a video and trigger only the element that contains FLVScrubber to reload with a new file-parameter.

I’d like to purchase your player but I first need it to work with wmode=”transparent”. I can’t seem to make it work. Is there a fix?

Specifically, the full screen mode does not work if the wmode attribute is set within the embed tag????

I have a css dropdown navigation system on top of the page which hides behind the flash player when I mouse over the flyouts. I need it to show up in front of a player. The only way to get it working (from the past experience) is to set wmode=”transparent” attribute on the object tag. When I set that flag the navigation works just fine, but your neat player doesn’t expand into a full-screen mode.

I think the answer is using the z-index propery of CSS, where you can influence the layer of every element. Have a look here: http://www.w3schools.com/css/pr_pos_z-index.asp, if z-index of flash is set lower than z-index of your menu, everything should look good.

Question:
I tried your simple demo from (http://topfstedt.de/weblog/?page_id=208) and created a simple page
with the same code found in the Embedding FLV-Scrubber txt area
and ran it in the same folder as the
Flvscrubber.swf

I change the value in the param and the embed src
to =”FLVScrubber.swf” and it worked fine - just like
the demo on the page.

I then changed the “flashVars” in the param and embed
to a local “file=test.flv” movie in the folder and it didn’t run.

Am I missing something here? I’ve tried different local
.flv movies in the same folder and still nothing - yet any
.flv on another OUTSIDE site works.
Is there something I can do or change so that it will run
my local video in a folder on my server?

Hi Clay,

the file parameter needs to be an URL instead of a relative path. So you need to use ‘file=http://www.yourserver.com/path_to_your_videos/test.flv’.

you can’t use a relative path, but if the videos are located in the same directory maybe it’s a good idea to dynamically script the URL with JavaScript on the client or PHP/Python/… on the server side.

Ok, almost there.
I’m using the following format

“file=http://myserver/videos/test.flv”
So if I use a dynamic generated URL
like
xyz=”http://myserver/videos/test.flv”
and
file=xyz
this might work?

Also, does the license have any effect on this
working ?

as long as at the end the flash embed code gets the string file=http://myserver.com/videos/test.flv everything is cool with variable replacement.
